RU Safe?
Protecting Yourself in Cyberspace
A service program sponsored by the Texas Young Lawyers Association
R U Safe is designed to educate children and parents about online dangers and give them tools needed to be safe while online. Using experts from law enforcement and child advocacy groups, the video covers such wide-range topics as cyber-bullying, social networking, chat rooms and online predators. It also provides parents with useful advice about how they should address the issue of cyber safety with their children.
Parent Online Safety tips:
- Teach yourself or go out and learn how to navigate online websites
- Encourage your children to never use their real names--use a nickname
- Keep the computer in a common area of the house
- Tell your children that you must have open access to social-networking sites
- Set personal settings to "private" on online profiles
- Tell your kids to keep passwords private
- Teach your kids to think before they post anything online
- Tell them that is is never okay to meet up with someone they met online
- Teach your children that anything posted online is public and in full view of others
- Be engaged and communicate with your kids
- Teach your children to be cautious when posing for and posting photos
- Remind your children to treat others like they would want to be treated
- Talk to your child and create a relationship of trust
